1st Timer

This is my first blog post ever as far as I can remember!

I am a Luthier from Minnesota, a builder of guitars and other stringed instruments. I suppose you could say i'm in training seeing as I am still a student of the trade. Though after 4 years of working I like to think I have bit more skill than that of a student.

Currently I'm in the middle of several instrument builds, all of which are to be graded and that starts to put a bit of pressure on you as time goes by. The problem with building instruments for a grade is that you have deadlines; requirements, things that constrain the artistic and passionate aspects of my profession. And yet, now and then you find time to make a plan, to let your artistic side show. For me, I always seem to find it in inlay.

Inlay is an art form all of its own, cutting and shaping pieces to create a beautiful patchwork of art. Choosing different materials from wood to stone, pearl to metal. All of these can come together to create one amazing picture that truly embodies the passion of the maker. But it is the design itself that I find to be most enjoyable as an artist. Designing a picture or a pattern to complement the instrument at hand, to give it its own "feel." Inlay, to me, is what really gives life to the work I have done.

More updates to come, plus pictures to show some of the artwork that will define my instruments
